The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos was founded in 1926 by a small group of producers of the island in order to support their agricultural activities and cheese-making of small amounts of milk. Since then, however, the company has grown rapidly, expanding its operations, increasing production and product range, modernizing its facilities, but always maintaining its commitment to quality and traditional values, working seamlessly with the purpose to serve cooperative members. EAS Naxos has 26 cooperative members, with a total of 3.274 natural members. The number of employees comes up to 81 people, while 35 others are employed at times as seasonal staff.
Today, through a continuous process of development and modernization, but always maintaining the same traditional values, our Cheese dairy holds a leading role in the domestic production of hard cheeses and products have gained an important place in the hearts of the consumers. EAS Naxos is a driving force and a growth engine to the rural people of Naxos, and furthermore to the economy of the entire island.
Naxos is one of the few places in Greece where the Agriculture and Livestock are a key driver of the local economy . The fertile land and abundant clean water contribute to this. The island raised about 4,500 dairy cows, as many cattle for fattening and 140,000 sheep and goats , while the Union receives annually from approximately 500 cooperating breeders 11,000 tons of cow's milk, sheep's 820 tons and 530 tons of goat. The turnover is about 18.000.000 € annually.
In 1955 is created the first organized creamery on the island in order to increase the production of dairy products and secure their qualitative nature. Today has a sophisticated cheese plant, the largest in the Cyclades, and certified according to ISO 9001: 2000 and ISO 22000: 2005 for all traditional products produced, while many important are the prizes that have won, and the reports, greek and international, took part. We produce a great variety of products such as Naxos Gruyere (PDO), Naxos Kefalotyri (arseniko) the hard cheese and the white cheese, cream, fresh milk (package of 1 litre) yoghurt and fresh butter.
The famous Gruyere Naxos, patented Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) since 1996 requires at least 80% cow's milk and a maximum of 20% goat’s, and aged at least 3 months on wooden shelves. Its production is around 900 tons per year and that is why the NDP Naxos participates in various European viewers and promoting Greek PDO products in Greece, Germany, France, Ukraine, Russia, China, the USA and South America, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
Countries exporting dairy products, notably Gruyere Naxos: Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, USA, England and most recently in the United Arab Emirates.
Recently, the Union has progressed EXTRA aging of Gruyere Naxos, 12-month and 24-month aging . Also in the production of two more codes: Gruyere Naxos with GREEK TRUFFLE and Gruyere Naxos with HERBS (Thyme, Oregano , Rosemary and trimmings Pepper).
The union has members with special private fields where the famous potatoes of Naxos are being produced. The amount of potatoes that is being traded through the market is around 3200 tones per year, and is being traded naxos potato seed as well.
